Security Alarm – Xena Disk Brake and Cable Lock System

Notes at the End

My issue was the need for a simple motorcycle security system that would not require that I have to do a bunch of wiring and a system that did not require that I activate it after every used of the motorcycle.  Specifically, I wanted an alarm/security system that I could use just when I was not comfortable where I was parking (like at motels, shopping malls, etc).

Enter the Xena Disk Brake and Cable Lock System (http://www.xenasecurity.com/).  The Xena has an infrared sensor that detects whether the lock is actually on a disk brake or not (or rather, whether something opaque to IR is between the sensor and its mirror).  If it's locked onto a brake or the special steel cable available as an accessory, it arms itself.  Any little motion makes it chirp and any sustained motion starts it shrilling. The alarm is loud enough to act as a deterrent.

Another nifty feature is as a self-protection device for you, the rider...Ever tried to ride off with your disk brake lock still on?  I can attest that the Xena does in fact make a hell of a lot of noise the second you start trying to move your bike with it on. This is good feature.

The company sells the disk lock in several varieties and it is a good idea that you call them and order it to make sure you get the exact one for your type of bike.  Also, I opted to purchase the model that can support the heavy-duty 6' steel cable (with a soft rubber lamination that prevents damage to the bike) that allows you to lock the bike to an immovable object as additional security when available.

I paid $150 for the entire system and am very happy with it.  It works well and is solidly built.  It runs off of 6 watch batteries (they sent me 2 extra sets of batteries at no charge which I thought was a nice touch).  I have not yet killed the initial set of batteries even after playing with it and setting it off about 20 times. It also comes with 3 keys and a nice case for the lock that fits nicely in my fairing pocket.  The cable fits fine in one of the saddlebags.

My only complaint is that the key only goes in one way and if you pick the wrong way, you set off the alarm inadvertently - not a huge deal.
